Open and close a POS shift

Goal

Open a till session, record cash movements, and close with a counted cash amount (X/Z reports).

Who it is for

Cashiers/managers with pos.manage_sessions. Reopen a closed shift needs pos.shift.reopen.

Preconditions

  • Active terminal; no second open session on the same terminal.
  • Clear the cart before closing from the frontline shift sheet.

Steps — frontline

  1. In Frontline POS open the shift sheet.
  2. Open: enter opening float → creates session status open, drawer float movement, audit pos.session_opened.
  3. During the shift: sales update counters; optional movements drop, payout, cash_refund / cash-in.
  4. Print an interim X report while the drawer is still open.
  5. Close: enter counted cash. Expected cash = opening float + cash sales + cash movements; variance posts over/short. Restaurant/deferred policies may post pending GL on close. Optional auto Z report.

Steps — staff back office

  1. Open Point of Sale → Till Sessions.
  2. Filter by terminal/status (open / closed).
  3. Open, close, reconcile tenders, print X/Z, or Reopen (reverses close-time variance JE).

Result

Closed session with counted cash, variance, and shift report available. Cannot open another session on that terminal until the current one is closed (or reopen flow completes).

Hard stops

  • Terminal … already has an open session.
  • Session … is not open. on close/movements.
  • Cart not empty when closing from frontline.
  • Reopen blocked if another open session exists.
