Create an item (SKU)

Goal

Create a new sellable SKU (product, service, or bundle). Saving creates the item (and an auto product model) and opens the item workspace.

Who it is for

Catalog clerk with catalog.manage.

Preconditions

  • At least one unit exists if Catalog setup requires a base/service unit.
  • Tax categories / chart accounts as needed if you fill Tax or GL account fields (accounting.view to see those fields).
  • Know Catalog setup policies: manual vs auto SKU, required barcode/image, bundle components (see setup).

Steps

  1. Open Products → SKUs → New item (or navigate to create SKU).
  2. Under Identity:
    • Choose Type (Product / Service / Bundle) — fixed after create.
    • Enter SKU (required when numbering is Manual; may be blank when Auto).
    • Enter Name (translatable; default locale required) and optional Description.
    • Set Item kind (Standard, Configurable, Digital, Rental) and Lifecycle (often Active).
  3. Under Inventory & units:
    • Set Stock policy (Stock item / Made to order / Non-stock).
    • Product: Base unit, Tracking (None / Batch/lot / Serial), optional Costing method if the tenant allows per-item costing override.
    • Service: Base unit (required when setup demands a unit on services).
    • Bundle: Fulfillment (Assembled holds kit stock; Exploded deducts components at sale), Components (item + quantity), base unit when assembled.
  4. Optional sections when permitted: Tax (tax category, default sales tax), Pricing (minimum sale price), GL accounts, Origin overrides, Capabilities (Sellable / Purchasable / Manufacturable / Rentable), Physical dimensions.
  5. Save. You land on the item workspace to continue with barcodes, media, units conversions, suppliers, and pricing.

Result

A new SKU exists under a new product model. Assign brand and categories on the product model; add barcodes/media on the item tabs if setup requires them before Active lifecycle is accepted.

Hard stops

  • SKU is required when numbering is manual.
  • A base unit is required for this item. / A unit is required for service items.
  • Bundle items require at least one component.
  • Unique SKU validation; inactive/wrong-type GL account overrides.
  • Policy: barcode or primary image required before the item can be active.
