Edit an item (SKU)
Goal
Update an existing SKU on the item workspace, manage related data tabs, or archive the item.
Who it is for
Catalog clerk with catalog.manage (viewers with catalog.view can open read-only). Specialized tabs need their own permissions (e.g. catalog.manage_barcodes, catalog.manage_media).
Preconditions
- Item exists and is not already archived (or you are reviewing an archived record).
- Type cannot change after create.
Steps
- Open the item from Products → SKUs (or from a product model’s SKU list).
- On General, edit the same identity / inventory / tax / accounts / capabilities fields as create (except Type). Save from the general form.
- Use detail tabs as needed:
- Units — alternate unit conversions (blocked if setup disables conversions).
- Barcodes —
catalog.manage_barcodes - Identifiers / Classifications — dedicated manage permissions
- Attributes, Media, Suppliers, Relations
- Prices — when pricing module +
pricing.view
- To retire the SKU: Archive. If Catalog setup requires a discontinue reason, select one before confirm. Message: Item archived.
- Brand, category tree, and variant axes: open the related product model (Catalog), not the SKU form.
Result
SKU master data and related tabs stay current for sales, purchasing, inventory, and POS.
Hard stops
- Type prohibited on update.
- Costing method locked after the first stock movement (
The costing method is locked after the first stock movement and cannot be changed.). A discontinue reason is required when archiving this item.when that option is on.Unit conversions are disabled for this tenant.
